Bonchoji

Temple

Founded during the 14th century, Bonchoji is home to a massive cycad tree (sotetsu) that is designated as a natural monument and is said to be as old as the temple itself. The temple houses an image of the Eleven-faced Kannon, a deity traditionally revered by local fishing families and Ama divers for protection at sea. Visitors can appreciate the preserved architecture and the collection of cultural artifacts, including hundreds of historic Buddhist scrolls, which reflect the long-standing religious traditions of the Toba coast.
