Local in Toba
Spring in Toba is always a season I look forward to. The cool winter winds from the north die down, and vibrant colors start to return to the land. This is the time when everyone enjoys the outdoors before the heat and humidity of summer arrive.
Seasonal Blooms: Cherry Blossoms and Wisteria
The cherry blossom season here usually peaks between late March and early April, though this is weather-dependent. One strong storm can take its toll on the flowers. One of my favorite locations is Shiroyama Park. It sits on the site of the former Toba Castle (only ruins remain now) and offers an amazing backdrop of the nearby islands and the sea.

Located just outside of the town’s core, Shimin-no-mori Park is also a great place to pick up lunch or a snack and relax under the cherry blossom trees. This is likely where you will see the most locals and their families.
If you are already planning on visiting Mikimoto Pearl Island, the Japanese garden on the southwest corner of the island also has a wonderful display of blossoms paired with a Japanese Zen rock garden

Eventually, the blossoms give way to green leaves, and in late April, the wisteria appears. Wild pockets of purple start to bloom, letting you know the season is moving along. A short walk from the castle ruins up Hinoyama, which is the hillside opposite the water, will take you to Medaka-no-gakko. This is the best-maintained wisteria in Toba and offers a nice view overlooking the town. It’s often quiet, and more often than not, you’ll have the place to yourself.

On the Trails: Hiking Local Paths
In my experience, the locals dislike the summer heat just as much as the tourists do. This makes spring the ideal time of year to get out into nature for everyone. As a bonus, the bugs haven’t reached full swing yet.

There are a few paths located close to the town’s core, such as Hinoyama and Hiyoriyama. If you are looking for something a little more challenging, there are several options offering different atmospheres. From the easy oceanside path to Isawa Shrine (Kaburako) to the longer hike up Mt. Aonamine to Shofukuji Temple, you can find more detailed information at our dedicated site: Ise Shima Hiking.
Coastal Cycling: The Pearl Road and Beyond
As an avid cyclist, I often think I live in a cycling paradise. The climate is suitable for year-round riding, the roads are well-maintained, and being out in the country lends itself to less traffic.

Toba’s Pearl Road is a key section of Japan’s Pacific Cycling Road. Riding the Pearl Road is always fun, but it can be a challenging route with many climbs and descents. However, if you’re a regular cyclist or up for a workout, the viewpoints dotted along the route are well worth the effort.
Of course, there are several shorter rides around Toba, including hopping on the local ferry and cruising around the island of Toshijima. This can be done on your own bicycle or by renting one on the island. Rental bikes can be found at Toba Station, Nakanogo Station, Toba Ichibangai, and on Toshijima. These are provided by Kintetsu, so you’ll need to download their app, Hello Cycling.

A Word to the Wise
Springtime can feel warm during the day, but once the sun goes down, the temperature drops quickly. It’s best to carry a light jacket or windbreaker. Vending machines are everywhere, so finding a drink usually isn't difficult.
