Local in Toba

While Toba is known for its quiet charm, it also offers some of the most unique, hands-on maritime adventures in Japan. If you want to get away from the museum displays and see the coastline from a different perspective, these four tours are the ones I’d recommend looking into.

1. Ama Adventure Tour (Kaito Yumin Club)

Diving with a real ama

This is for the person who doesn’t just want to watch, but wants to participate. You’re taken by boat to an uninhabited island to snorkel and dive alongside a working Ama diver. It’s a rare, active way to experience their 3,000-year-old tradition. What makes it special is the environmental aspect. You help "thin out" sea urchins to protect the local seaweed beds, making your dive part of the bay's actual conservation efforts. You can find the full itinerary and booking details for this diving experience here.

2. 1 Day Ama Experience Tour (Kaito Yumin Club)

If you want a full, deep-dive into the culture without necessarily getting into a wetsuit, this is the most comprehensive option. It’s a well-paced day that connects the history at Mikimoto Pearl Island with the modern-day reality of Osatsu, the town with the highest concentration of Ama in Japan. You get to walk the village, visit the museum and the famous Ishigami-san shrine, and then share a seafood lunch and conversation with the divers in a traditional hut. 3. One-Day Ama Tour (Osatsu DMO)

The Osatsu DMO version of this tour has its own local flavor, focusing heavily on the spiritual and community side of the village. These tours usually include a guided hike up to Shofukuji Temple where divers have prayed for safety for centuries. This gives you a much deeper look at the religious life of the community. It’s a great choice if you prefer a slower pace that balances the famous seafood lunch with a quiet walk through the temple grounds. 4. Island Adventure Sea Kayak (Kaito Yumin Club)

For a different kind of thrill, I suggest getting out on a kayak. This tour takes you through the calm and beautiful waters of Ise-Shima National Park toward a cluster of deserted islands. It’s the best way to see the coastline from sea level and explore areas that aren't accessible by larger boats. The experience is accessible even if you’ve never paddled before, and there is something incredibly peaceful about stopping for a break on a completely empty beach.
