Hachiman Shrine

Shrine

At Hachiman Shrine in Toshi, a large annual festival known as Jinzai is held each year. One of its most striking scenes is the Omato Shinji ritual, in which islanders compete to seize a mixture of seaweed and ink carried on a bamboo frame covered by paper. The ink taken in this ritual is then used to draw a symbol called Maruhachi—a circle enclosing the character for eight—on houses and boats, to ward off evil and to pray for bountiful catches and household safety. The Maruhachi mark can be seen throughout the island.
