Winter in Uramura: Oyster Season is Here!

Time to gather around the grill for this year’s "Shell Oysters." When the calendar turns to November, people in Toba start getting restless. Local oysters begin appearing in the seafood sections of supermarkets, and social media buzzes with info on which oyster huts are opening when. This is how winter begins for us. Uramura is a special place within Toba. The countless rafts floating in the intricate Ohno-ura Bay are the quintessential landscape of this town.

A Family Tradition: "Heading to Uramura"

For me, heading to Uramura with my family on a winter weekend has become an annual ritual. We pull out our old down jackets—the ones we don't mind getting a little dirty or smelling like smoke—and hop in the car with a determined, "Alright, let’s eat!"

As we drive along the Pearl Road toward Uramura and see the oyster hut signs, we are finally enveloped in that unique air—a mix of burning wood, charcoal, and the scent of the sea. It’s not like going to a fancy restaurant. You’ll find concrete floors, simple benches, and mountains of oysters in their shells. Right next to the busy producers, we put on cotton work gloves and "battle" with the piping-hot shells. This "unpretentious luxury" is the highlight of winter for those of us living here.

The Uramura Style: Enjoying It "Your Way"

The fun part about the oyster huts in Uramura is that the rules vary completely from shop to shop.

  • "Bring Your Own Seasonings" is the Standard: Ponzu and lemon are basics, but regulars bring everything from grated daikon radish and Tabasco to melted cheese to create their perfect flavor.

  • Cold-Weather Gear is a Must: Many shops are converted working sheds, so it can be just as cold inside as it is outside! But honestly, that’s when the hot grilled oysters taste the best.

  • Freedom of "Bring Your Own": Some shops provide everything, while others allow you to bring your own rice balls, meat, or drinks to grill alongside the oysters.

Because of this variety, checking the shop’s website or social media beforehand to see "what’s the deal this year" is an essential part of the experience.
